What is a tutor's role?
Tutors are most often matched with an individual student for the school year. The children are in grades 1-6 and need help with many different things. The first priority is school work. Tutors can then use this work as a springboard for other activities. Additional resources are available to extend or remediate their understanding of the classwork and other skills.
The tutoring center has a lot of other activities you can enjoy with your student including a computer lab, resource center, life skills, library, math activities, games and more.
Being a consistent source of encouragement and positive interaction can dramatically influence the life of a young student.
How do I get started?
Complete a volunteer tutor application.
All New Tutors are required to attend an orientation and training conference.
Initial orientations are September 21, 22 or 23, 2009 from 6:15 - 8:30 p.m. in room 351 of St. Vincent de Paul Center.
For those beginning after the September start, orientations are generally held the third Wednesday of October, November, January and February at 6:15pm at the Tutoring Center.
New tutors may begin tutoring prior to this, but must attend the next scheduled orientation.
Next Sessions: November 18th, January 20th
